General Purpose

The Government Affairs Director supports activities and drives outcomes related to state government affairs functions. This position is responsible for supporting and maintaining positive working relations between the company and elected officials and government agencies to protect the company and its customers from adverse legislation or states policies or rules. 

Responsibilities

  • Maintain legislative and gubernatorial relationships critical to the success of the function.
  • Monitor and assess legislation.
  • Act, when and where appropriate, to communicate company perspective at legislative hearings, government ceremonies, political fundraisers and various community events.
  • Seek input from affected business operations and ensures awareness and impact of state legislation affecting company activities.
  • Coordinate with counterparts at Rocky Mountain Power and Pacific Power.
  • Actively acquire knowledge of regulation and regulated industries essential to the success of the government affairs function.
  • Develop strategies and position papers for company lobbying efforts.
  • Ensure awareness and impact of state legislation affecting company activities.’
  • Engage and organize events to educate government officials on utility operations, processes, and company initiatives

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, communications or related degree or related field or equivalent combination of experience and knowledge resulting in demonstrated knowledge of the utility industry.
  • Seven years of related experience. 
  • Demonstrated management, teamwork, and leadership skills to produce desired business results.
  • Assessment skills to determine needs and develop strategies to strengthen relationships with government officials and interest groups.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills including ability to establish trust, maintain confidence, understand and influence behavior in diverse social and business situations, negotiate acceptable solutions, provide leadership for company positions, and influence outcomes through relationships.
  • Demonstrated oral presentation, listening, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of external business environment, laws, political climate, the Company’s strategies, policies, practices, and procedures, and the social climates where the company operates.
  • In depth familiarity with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Extensive travel is required.

This position is eligible for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 15.00% of salary.
