Hydro Communications Technician is a supervising Employee who: (a) is qualified as a Journeyman Communication Technician with two year experience at a hydro facility; (c) possesses an F.C.C. license to maintain microwave and radio equipment; (d) has the knowledge and ability to install, test, troubleshoot and maintain all Company communication, SCADA and telemetering equipment (e) is responsible for a communications shop, including vehicles, tools, test equipment, spare parts and supplies provided by the Company; and (f) prepares reports, maintains records and as-built drawings and provides equipment recommendations incidental to their work.


The typical duties of this position are: 

  • Coordinate work with other company departments such as Hydro East Plants, IT, plants, and engineering and with contacts outside the company such as adjacent utilities, telephone companies and contractors.
  • Performs the installation, testing and maintenance of electronic communications equipment such as microwave systems, voice and data radio communications systems, supervisory control an data acquisition systems, PLC’s (Programable logic controllers ), telephone exchanges and systems, power line carriers, protective relay communications systems, computer communications systems and P.A. systems. These systems include analog, digital and fiber optic links.
  • Responsible for maintaining security cameras and involvement in other sections of the security network systems.
  • Responsible to maintain river gauge stations thru out Bear River system, Plant and recreational  site siren systems.
  • Schedules and coordinates equipment outages and preventive maintenance with other sections, departments and companies.
  • Maintains area records, orders parts and equipment and performs record keeping required by the company and the FCC. Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without an accommodation.


  • Experience related to the maintenance of Communication Systems at an electrical generating facility.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Effective analytical, and problem solving, and decision-making skills. 
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Ability to read and interpret written documents such as drawings, manuals, procedures, safety rules, policies. 
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Able to conceptualize and develop creative alternatives to problem resolution
  • Capable of interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
