General Purpose

Provides advice and counsel to management and client organizations. Conducts special studies and analyses, develops alternatives, presents recommendations to management and influences management decisions. Researches, analyzes, develops and implements new strategies, programs, and/or processes in response to changing internal and external conditions. Provides direction to junior staff and manages project schedules.

Responsibilities

 

Responsibilities of the mid- level position include the following:  

                                                                                               

  • Economic evaluation of commodity transactions; term, structured and derivative, in support of PacifiCorp’s regulated commercial and trading and asset management activities. 
  • Develop critical decision making tools formulated in spreadsheets and production cost models that can evaluate physical and financial commodity markets (natural gas, coal and power, generating assets, transmission assets, and ancillary services).
  • Identify, analyze and disaggregate each transaction into appropriate risk instruments.
  • Assist in the development and execution of strategies.
  • Act as liaison between origination, risk management, middle office and trading staff, and other subject matter experts when implementing evaluation methods and assumptions. 
  • Develop, implement and maintain valuation parameters used to analyze optionality (this includes volatilities and correlation).

 

 

In addition to above, the responsibilities of the senior- level position include the following:

                                                                                               

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on valuation methods and models and provides guidance to more junior level staff within the department.
  • Perform asset valuations (i.e., generating assets, transmission assets, and utility assets,) and economic analysis of term/structured commodity transaction opportunities (i.e., electricity, natural gas, diesel fuel, and ancillary services).
  • Develop decision making tools formulated in spreadsheets and production cost models.
  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of avoided cost pricing for standard and non-standard qualifying facility power purchase agreements.  Provide support for regulatory filings and proceedings involving avoided cost prices and methodologies.
  • Compile, analyze, interpret, and summarize resource operational data, load data, transmission data, commodity price and fuel cost data needed to produce and defend analytical studies.  .
  • Identify and analyze key risks and uncertainties.
  • Prepare clear and concise deliverables that document results, risks, methods, and key assumptions.
  • Present recommendations supported by study results and risk analysis.
  • Work with a broad range of subject matter experts to ensure analytical assumptions, methods, and results are understood and reasonable.

Requirements

Requirements for the mid- level position include the following:

 

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Finance, Financial Engineering, Actuarial Science, Statistics or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • A minimum of five years of related experience in commodity markets and financial analysis.
  • Strong spreadsheet skills.
  • Familiarity with financial modeling concepts, options pricing, and risk management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills involving the ability to establish trust, maintain confidence, and understand social behavior and interactions.
  • Ability to work with all organizational levels to influence actions and negotiate outcomes.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers to gather, analyze, and summarize data. 
  • Ability to work in a high volume and tight deadline arena.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with a strong ability to think independently and facilitate cooperation.  

 

 

 

In addition to the above, the requirements of the senior- level position include the following:

 

  • A minimum of seven years of related experience in commodity markets and financial/statistical analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of valuation techniques and analytical methods specific to current developments in the electric utility industry.
  • Strong excel spreadsheet skills, including pivot-tables and data analytics, such as goal seek and data tables.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, such as slide presentations and memos, that can be leveraged to describe complex analytical methods to a broad range of audiences, including management and external parties

Preferences

  • Advanced degree.
  • Background and work experience using statistical modeling, and statistical and data tools, such as R and SQL.
  • Background and prior exposure to VBA for Excel.
  • Accounting experience a plus.
  • Familiarity with utility economics, including revenue requirement and net power costs.
