General Purpose

Defines standards, plans and detailed designs for highly complex networks.  Scope includes traditional IT enterprise data center networks and utility-specialized operational technology (OT) networks at plants, substations, and field area networks.  Plan and coordinate implementation of cross-functional or cross-company work, including change management and resource oversight.  

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop complex data network plans for enterprise network upgrades and expansions. (25-30%)
  • Design and implementation of complex data systems, network configurations, and network architecture, including hardware and software technology, site locations, business continuity, disaster recovery, and integration of technologies. (25-35%)
  • Provide network engineering expert resources in these disciplines: Percentages included in two responsibilities above.
    • Core routing
    • Core switching
    • Network security
    • Network diagnostics
    • Application load balancing
  • Application load balancing
  • Assess and resolve the most complex data network problems and incidents. (20-25%)
  • Review analyses and technical feasibility to develop data network deployment strategies. (5%)
  • Assess and review data network growth forecasts and to ensure that business needs are translated into network capacity requirements. (5%)
  • Lead and support efforts to resolve data network problems and incidents through root cause analysis and study of potential network deficits. (5%)
  • Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned (5%)

 

In addition to the above, the responsibilities for the Network Engineer 4 position include the following:

 

  • Design and develop the most complex data network plans for enterprise network upgrades and expansions. (25-30%)

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related technical field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically 4 years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a Bachelor’s degree. A minimum of 2 years additional directly related technical experience is required.)
  • Experience deploying and managing QoS, MPLS, VPNs.
  • Advanced skills in BGP and OSPF configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Five years of experience with data networking or general telecommunications experience.  Cisco IP networking at mid or senior-level (CCNP or equiv.)
  • Network analysis and design skills involving the ability to gather data on systems requirements/issues, define alternative approaches, assess business impact, recommend cost effective solutions, and develop and implement those solutions.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills


In addition to the above, the requirements for the Network Engineer 4 position include the following:

  • Ten years of experience with data networking or general telecommunications experience with Cisco IP networking at senior-level (CCIE equiv.)
  • Expert level skills in BGP and OSPF configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Expert-level experience deploying and managing QoS, MPLS, VPNs.
  • Ability to self-manage own work, be a change agent, and effectively lead work groups.\
  • Recognized top industry expert.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
Preferences
  • Experience deploying IPv6
  • Experience designing and supporting complex field-area networks supporting Automated Metering Initiatives (AMI) or similar large-scale field networking deployments
  • Utility IoT Experience, zero touch and rapid deployment techniques
  • Scripting related to automation of network devices
  • Experience with networking aspects of compliance standards including NERC-CIP, SOX controls, CSC-20, ISO-27001 annex A, et al.
