General Purpose

PacifiCorp is seeking an experienced civil engineer/project manager to join our dam safety team which is becoming regionally known as a leader in the dam safety field. In dam safety you will have the opportunity to not only stretch your current engineering knowledge into multiple facets of civil engineering (i.e. structural, geotechnical, hydrology, and hydraulics) but also regularly interact with national experts on those disciplines. In addition, your work will take you into the remote and scenic areas of our hydroelectric projects in six different states.

Summary:

 

Leads functional teams and provides oversight in performing all phases of projects. Assists with internal training for engineers and technicians. Works closely with managers and principal engineers on higher-level projects, and in recommending and implementing changes that benefit the company. Develops advanced engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the company’s hydroelectric generation facilities/systems. In addition to having responsibility for all aspects of the project over the entire project life (initiate, plan, execute, control, close), is responsible for assembling project teams, assigning individual responsibilities, identifying appropriate resources needed, and developing schedules to ensure timely completion of assigned projects.

Responsibilities

 

  • Design, develop, modify, and evaluate systems, process, or facilities to support company objectives, utilizing engineering methods.
  • Develop highly complex engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments. 
  • Determine methods and techniques for obtaining results.
  • Act as a lead/expert in the work group; train and mentor associate and career level engineers, technicians and drafters.
  • Recommend alternative engineering solutions to management to meet business needs. 
  • Deliver on commitments and manage outside engineering services to accomplish the assigned work.
  • Maintain project timelines and budgets.
  • Analyze and design engineering methods

 

In addition to the above, the responsibilities of the senior engineer II include the following

 

  • Manage the planning, design, and construction of multiple large scale capital projects (e.g., modifications/additions to facilities and infrastructure) under minimal supervision.
  • Develop detailed project plans and ensure project scopes, team responsibilities, milestone dates, and the procurement strategy are clearly stated for all assigned projects. 
  • Manage the bid process, and contracts for external engineering and construction services. 
  • Negotiate with vendors and contractors regarding work scope changes and ensure that all contract commitments are completed on time per the scope of work and technical specifications.
  • Manage construction management team activities in conjunction with field operations.  
  • Determine methods and techniques for obtaining results.
  • Recommend alternative engineering solutions to management to meet business needs. 
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (or related) from an accredited college/university..
  • A minimum of five or more years’ experience in delivering industrial power systems or large heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of principles in area of engineering specialty.
  • Understanding of company’s business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations and the National Electric Codes. 
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers including automated tools. 

 

In addition to the above, the requirements of the senior engineer II include the following:

 

 

  • A minimum of eight or more years’ experience in delivering industrial power systems or large heavy civil infrastructure projects
  • Registration as a professional engineer.
  • Project management and leadership skills including the ability to lead interdisciplinary teams from project conception, through design, permitting, bidding, and ultimate construction while maintaining  project timelines, budgets, and other deliverable commitments.
Preferences
  • Master’s degree in a civil engineering specialty area.
  • Project Management Professional certification by the Project Management Institute
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Projects or other project management software
