General Purpose

Develop complex engineering documents, plans, specifications, calculations, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of company SCADA systems used for the monitoring and control of the company’s expansive electrical grid.

Responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Lead in the SCADA design of numerous RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) architectures to support various ongoing projects, including creation or modifications to RTU designs, configurations, and points list implementations. (25%)
  • Coordinate with various engineering disciplines, project engineers/managers, and customer representatives to finalize SCADA point lists based on anticipated requirements. (20%)
  • Work with database analysts, business system analysts, and advanced application teams to ensure the remote data requirements are completely and accurately implemented into the OSI Monarch EMS/SCADA system. (15%)
  • Develop complex engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, and design documents. (10%)
  • Design, develop, modify, and evaluate systems, process, or methods to create or improve standards to support company objectives, utilizing engineering methods. (5%)
  • Develop alternative engineering solutions (with management direction) to meet business needs. (5%)
  • Deliver on commitments and utilize outside engineering services (as needed) to accomplish the assigned work. (5%)
  • Maintain project timeliness and budgets. (5%)
  • Act as a lead in the work group; train and mentor level 1 and 2 SCADA engineers. (5%)
  • Utilize, analyze, and design engineering methods. (3%)
  • Design, develop, modify, and evaluate systems, processes, or methods to support company objectives. (2%)

 

In addition to the above, the Level 4 responsibilities include:

  • Act as a lead expert in the work group; train and mentor level 1, 2, and 3 SCADA engineers.
  • Develop engineering standards based on sound engineering principles and methods to support evolving company needs and objectives.
     

Requirements for this position include the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree. A minimum of two years additional directly related technical experience is required.)
  • A minimum of five years of directly related experience in engineering related field.
  • Expert level knowledge of electric grid energy management systems or similar for the purpose of configuring and engineering SCADA systems used for electric grid monitoring, protection and control.
  • Expert knowledge and application of principles in area of SCADA engineering.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
  • Ability to provide timely assessments with limited information and/or assumptions.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools. 

 

In addition to the above, the Level 4 requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; or equivalent work experience.   • A minimum of ten years of directly related experience in engineering related field.
  • Expert level knowledge of electric grid energy management systems or similar for the purpose of configuring and engineering SCADA systems used for electric grid monitoring, protection and control.

Preferences

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Engineering experience specifically related to industrial power systems or electric utility power systems. 
  • Experience with SCADA systems, including RTU (Remote Terminal Unit), IED (Intelligent Electronic Device), EMS (Energy Management System), HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and Annunciator technologies.
  • Experience with DNP3, Modbus, and other legacy communication protocols, such as SC1801, PERT 26/31, and TG6500 and TELEGYR protocols. 
  • Moderate experience with IP networking and Ethernet technologies, including the development of IP-based networks.
  • Experience with serial communication standards, including TIA-232-F (RS-232) and TIA-485(-A) (RS-485).
  • Experience with OSI Monarch or other energy management systems. 
  • Understanding or experience with fiber transport and microwave/wireless system technologies, including TDM-based communications systems. 
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and the National Electric Code.

This position is eligible for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 15.00% of salary.
