General Purpose

Responsible for maintaining systems and their associated operating systems for computer applications. Conduct analysis, create system specifications, develop, test, and implement operating systems. Utilizes existing or new technology in the automation of processes. Evaluate software packages and provides recommendations to management.


Responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Assist in providing operational support of the Windows server computing environment, including Microsoft Active Directory and Group Policy. Responsibilities include Windows operating system and application software installations and upgrades, backup and recovery administration, adding/deleting peripheral equipment, troubleshooting system and application issues. Understand and adhere to security requirements from critical security controls (CSC) and other security mandates where applicable.
  • Perform all procedures necessary to ensure the safety of information systems assets and to protect systems from intentional or inadvertent access or destruction. Interface with the user community to understand their security needs and implements procedures to accommodate them. Conduct accurate evaluation of the level of security required.  
  • Monitor and respond to complex technical control facility hardware and software problems using a variety of hardware and software testing tools and techniques. Provide primary interface with vendor support service groups or provides internal analysis and support to ensure proper escalation during outages or periods of degraded system performance. Provide guidance and training for less experienced technicians.
  • Provide documentation for the support of information technology processes and procedures.
  • Assist in the research and implementation of system administration software and hardware.
  • Develop programs to support application and system operations.  
  • Provide technical input to assist in development of project planning.  
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.  


    Additionally, responsibilities for Sys Admin 2 include:

  • Provide technical guidance for directing and monitoring information systems operations. Implement machine modifications to increase capacity of the system. Compile records and reports concerning production, machine malfunctioning and maintenance. May advise on workflow plans, methods, and procedures analysis. Analyze the results of monitoring the operating system(s) and recommend changes to improve processing and utilization.
  • Provide support and training to Sys Admin 1’s.


Requirements for this position include the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related technical field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically 4 years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a Bachelor’s degree. A minimum of 2 years additional directly related technical experience is required.)
  • Basic related experience in Windows operating system server support and analysis, including Active Directory.
  • Basic datacenter skills including racks, power distribution units, cabling, networking and installing servers and other peripherals.
  • Basic related experience in hypervisor virtualization, either vSphere or Hyper-V.
  • Basic networking knowledge, including TCP/IP, routing and switching, subnets, DNS, DHCP, ports and services, etc.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.


    Requirements for Level 2 include:

  • Three years related experience in Windows operating system server support and analysis, including Active Directory.
  • Three years related experience working within a technology datacenter, including racks, power distribution units, cabling, networking, and installing rack servers and other peripherals.
  • Three years related experience working with hypervisor virtualization.
  • Three years related experience with networking technologies: TCIP/IP, DNS, DHCP, subnets, etc.


  • Citrix application presentation
  • Microsoft and/or VMware certification
  • Experience with HP Proliant and/or Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) server hardware, including chassis and fabric interconnects
  • Microsoft / Windows Powershell scripting
