  • Install, maintain, test, adjust, troubleshoot and repair substation equipment which includes, but is not limited to:
    • Electromechanical, solid state and microprocessor protective relays, indicating and KWH/KW meters, recording instruments including sequential event recorders and digital fault recorders, controls to all substation apparatus including breakers, transformers, regulators, capacitors, reactors and all associated equipment, and remote control equipment including various forms of System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
  • Perform testing on substation apparatus such as power factor testing, transformer turns ratio testing, megger testing and other analytical tests as assigned.
  • Operate substation equipment, including switching and grounding.
  • Follow safety rules and company standards.
  • Work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions, and be responsible for tools, test equipment, and vehicles.
  • Physical requirements may include working in confined spaces and in elevated work areas such as heights from ladders, towers, structures, roofs, scaffolds, buckets etc, on construction sites, near moving mechanical parts, in the proximity of fumes, dust, noise, water, working in close proximity to cables and conductors energized at 600 volts or higher. May work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions, and be responsible for tools, test equipment, and vehicles.


  • A High School Diploma, GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Successful completion of a required written examination reflective of AC and DC electrical theory. (Material covered in chapters 1-5, 7, 12-14 in Schaum's Outlines of Basic Electricity 2nd edition).
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record and the ability to acquire a Medical Examiner's Certificate. 
  • Ability to understand and comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow safety rules and use PPE's appropriate for work being performed.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to lift and move heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds.


  • Experience in electrical construction or maintenance in commercial or industrial settings. Experience in installation and troubleshooting of motor controls and process instrumentation. Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical theory.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electrical installations safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely use hand tools such as screwdrivers, plyers, wrenches, sockets and tape measures.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely use power tools such as drills, grinders, saws, heat guns, and soldering irons. Knowledge of and the ability to safely use electrical test equipment such as volt meters, amp meters, ohm meters, Meggers and power quality analyzers.
  • Ability to read, understand and use electrical schematics. Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and ability to use programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer. PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
  • A state-issued Journeyman Electrician's license.
  • A college or trade school degree or certificate in the electrical field with applicable hands-on experience. Military experience in the electrical field with applicable hands-on experience.
  • Experience in the electrical utility industry or applicable high-voltage experience. Department of Motor Vehicles CMV (Medical Card)
