General Purpose

Monitors, maintains & operates the power plant & pollution control equipment to meet state regulations as well as maintain a supply of softened water for plant needs.  May engage in & safely perform maintenance activities that are preventive in nature or make emergency repairs w/in their capability.  Assist other maintenance crafts in disassembling-assembling, repairing, troubleshooting, adjusting, replacing, & rebuilding equipment

Responsibilities

  • Routinely inspect & check equipment for; proper valving, oil levels, pressure, temperature, vibration & operating conditions.  Operate all turbines, boilers, generators, auxiliary equipment, plant water systems & overall plant systems.  Keep records of equipment & their operating conditions. 
  • Pre-inspect, monitor & assist the control room operator in bringing the generating units on & off the line.  Remove/replace equipment to/from service.  Add oil & grease to equipment to ensure safe operation.  Adjust packing, inspect for condenser leaks & install condenser tube plugs. Change HVAC filters, change & clean inline spin on disposable filters. Perform temporary leak repairs, unplug drain lines, remove & replace non-asbestos insulation. Replace pressure gauges 200 psi or less (low temperature, non corrosive), adjust belt skirting.  Recalibrate CEMs when they fail daily calibration & I & C is not on site.  Write work orders for the repair of defective or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Perform switching functions as directed by the Shift Supervisor through confirmed dispatching orders. Perform emergency switching as dictated by situation affecting life, property & system stability.
  • Inspect, monitor, calculate & adjust all operating equipment such as tank levels, temperatures, pressures, pumps & motors to insure proper operating condition.
  • May analyze & maintain boiler water, cooling tower water & boiler make-up water chemistries w/chemical testing & treatment.
  • Monitor, operate & maintain fuel-feeding systems to assure a continual fuel flow to burners. - Maintain daily log checklist for equipment identifying equipment condition & operating status for relieving operators, supervisor & control room operator.
  • Assist shift supervisor, control room operator & other operators in coordinating work efforts. 

May perform other duties as assigned such as the following: Cleaning plant equipment and areas, changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, testing emergency equipment & maintaining intake and discharge pond water quality & level.  Change & add oil & filters.  Gather oil & lubrication samples.  Leak check pneumatic equipment.  Change CEM filters.  Blow back sensing lines.  Initiate manual CEM re-calibration. Adjust/replace equipment tension on chains and belts.  Replace shear pins.  Replace pressure gauges w/isolation valves or de-pressurized.  Rod sensing ports.  Blow back pulverizer & coal pipe taps.  Repair broken tubing & flex hoses on less than 300 psi systems. Non-weld leak repairs.  Unplug lines.  Open/close all vessels, access doors, inspection ports.  Change dust suppression bags.  Perform carpentry work.  Tighten packing & repack valves.  Change gaskets & perform other light duty maintenance

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of an Apprentice Maintenance Operator program incl. req'd course work/testing.
