General Purpose

The primary function of the Substation Engineering group is delivery of engineering designs for substation capital construction and modification projects The Design Specialist position provides detailed designs and provides expertise in a specialized field.  Acts as a resource to generalist personnel to investigate and resolve problem situations or complex issues.  Researches, analyzes, develops and implements new programs, systems and/or processes in response to changing internal and external conditions.  Develops and maintains operational and procedural documentation.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Associate Design Specialist include the following:

•    Perform substation system drafting and designs utilizing established engineering guidelines and standards.
•    Draft construction drawings from engineering sketches, field mark-ups, and other information utilizing manual or automated methods using computer-assisted drafting systems (CAD)..
•    Select and apply drawing techniques and layouts in accordance with established procedures and standards.
•    Prepare preliminary drawings for engineering approval.
•    Develop bill of materials from engineering drawings. 


In addition, the responsibilities of the Design Specialist position include the following:

•    Draft plans, elevations and details for structures, installations, and other projects.
•    Draw maps, diagrams, and profiles.
•    Prepare construction drawings utilizing established engineering guidelines, specifications, and standards.
•    Prepare wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, and panel designs.
•    Prepare the physical layouts, including general plans and elevations, grounding plans, cable and conduit plans, and construction specifications.

Requirements

Requirements for the Associate Design Specialist position include the following:

•    High School Diploma or equivalent; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    Basic knowledge of engineering principles as well as basic knowledge of electrical substations, generating facilities, and protection and control schemes. 
•    Proficiency with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD applications.
•    General knowledge of engineering standards/guidelines and drawings, established drafting and design techniques.
•    Ability to work with all levels of an organization including people with different styles and backgrounds.
•    Ability to interact with personnel (field and office) to obtain information.
•    Ability to create material lists from a drawing for engineering approval. 

 

In addition, the requirements for the Design Specialist position include the following:
•    A minimum of three years electrical drafting experience.
•    A minimum of two years experience in electrical system design, using AutoCAD.
•    General knowledge of electrical circuits and schematics. 
•    Knowledge of engineering principles, as well as general knowledge of generating facilities, power substations, and protection and control schemes. 
•    Design skills, including the development of detail design drawings from engineering guidelines and sketches. 
•    Communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult and resolve internal and external customer issues which may be critical, sensitive, moderately complex, or urgent in nature.
 

Preferences

  • Knowledge of electrical safety codes and design standards, as well as knowledge of the company's design standards and specifications.
  • Advanced computer skills, including SAP.
  • Associates degree or greater education in engineering or a closely related field.
