General Purpose

The energy industry is rapidly changing, and PacifiCorp is leading the way in renewable energy deployment and electricity market development. With the emergence of the extended day-ahead market (EDAM), this role will be critical in providing actionable insights through data to improve PacifiCorp interactions with organized electricity markets. This is an opportunity to apply data analytics to optimize PacifiCorp’s operations across six states to minimize power costs for over 2 million customers, while ensuring reliable operations and integrating gigawatts of clean energy to the grid. 


This position will provide technical support on complex and business critical projects related to Energy Supply management across six states. The incumbent is responsible for gathering data from a variety of sources and designing custom tools to optimize data mining, cleaning, validating and analyzing data. The data includes but is not limited to, loads, weather patterns, generation and transmission performance, and market prices and liquidity. This position is intended to make PacifiCorp operations and near-term resource planning better, smarter and faster by gleaning insights from data.

Responsibilities of the Data Scientist I & II include the following:

  • Create data mining models to identify and mine data from reliable internal and external sources.
  • Develop and apply custom data models and algorithms to large data sets.
  • Design tools and testing models to ensure data accuracy.
  • Perform statistical reporting and create data analysis methodologies to identify trends in large data sets.
  • Collaborate with grid operations, finance and regulatory teams to analyze problems, identify issues, innovate and deliver solutions consistent with schedules established and improve business outcomes.
  • Provide technical expertise across business to support functions such as load forecast, energy day ahead trading. 
  • Research and apply emerging data science techniques to develop tools and analysis for informed business decisions in Energy Supply Management.
  • Create and present reports with detailed findings, recommendations and solutions.
  • Glean insights from the data to inform and improve market participation, near- and long-term resource planning, energy trading strategies.
  • Gather, document and manage business use cases and business requirements.
  • Support data literacy and scripting knowledge development across the team.
  • Participate in government, industry and other applicable associations or work groups which have the ability to influence or set policy impacting the future of our utility.

Requirements for this position include the following:

 

Requirements of the Data Scientist I position include the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Analytics, Data Science, Math, Statistics, Physics or related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, R, SQL 
  • Knowledge of platforms such as MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, MySQL, etc 
  • Proven ability to connect the dots from the data to the business solution 
  • Proficient technical writing and public speaking skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques 
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work cross functionally and support multiple departments.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices for data science and data governance. 

 

In addition to the above, the Data Scientist II requirements include the following:

  • A minimum of 3 years of related professional experience.
  • Understanding of generation dispatch, transmission, and organized wholesale markets
  • Experience using C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, R, SQL 
  • Experience using platforms such as MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, MySQL, etc 
  • Experience with business intelligence and data analytics tools such as Power BI and Tableau 
  • Hands-on experience with MLOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, model deployment, monitoring, and versioning. 
  • Experience with cloud services and platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure for deploying and managing ML models, specifically using Azure Databricks, Azure Machine Learning Studio, Azure Data Factory
  • Experience using Azure DevOps and Git for version control
  • Experience in story-telling through the use of data  

Preferences

  • Master’s in data science or related technical field.
  • Understanding of generation dispatch, transmission, and organized wholesale markets
  • Understanding of business intelligence and data analytics tools such as Power BI and Tableau
