General Purpose
This position will support PacifiCorp’s participation in the California Independent System Operator’s (CAISO) Western Energy Imbalance Market (WEIM) and Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM) and will be part of a growing team with a big mission. PacifiCorp is seeking a candidate who enjoys tackling a steep learning curve on utility operations and integrating that knowledge with data science and analytical tools and insights. The candidate will not only thrive in data science but will eagerly participate in problem solving activities that drive the business forward. This position provides technical and analytical support for Energy Supply Management by developing high quality reporting, dashboards, and data driven insights that support operational and strategic decision making. This role involves transforming large, complex datasets into meaningful intelligence using statistical analysis, machine learning, and custom modeling. The incumbent is responsible for gathering data from a variety of sources, building and automating reporting pipelines, enhancing data quality, and designing intuitive visualizations that improve data accessibility across the business. This role focuses on creating clear, accurate, and timely reporting and advanced analytics products that support market operations, resource planning, trading, and internal stakeholders. The position strengthens PacifiCorp’s data literacy and operational effectiveness by transforming complex data into actionable information. This position will join a newly formed team and will get the opportunity to help grow the function in both scale and scope. Responsibilities of the Data Scientist I & II include the following:
- Develop dashboards, visualizations and reporting tools used by traders, analysts and leadership to support operational and strategic decisions.
- Create data mining models to identify and mine data from reliable internal and external sources.
- Develop and apply analytical, statistical and optimization models to large time-series-based energy and market datasets.
- Design validation frameworks, testing processes, and quality checks to ensure data accuracy, consistency and fitness for operational use.
- Perform statistical reporting and create data analysis methodologies to identify trends in large data sets.
- Collaborate with grid operations, finance and regulatory teams to analyze problems, identify issues, innovate and deliver solutions consistent with schedules established and improve business outcomes.
Provide technical expertise across business to support functions such as load forecast, energy day ahead trading. - Research and apply emerging data science techniques to develop tools and analysis for informed business decisions in Energy Supply Management.
- Create and present reports with detailed findings, recommendations and solutions.
- Glean insights from the data to inform and improve market participation, near- and long-term resource planning, energy trading strategies.
- Gather, document and manage business use cases and business requirements.
- Support data literacy and scripting knowledge development across the team.
- Participate in government, industry and other applicable associations or work groups which have the ability to influence or set policy impacting the future of our utility.

Requirements of the Energy Supply Data Scientist I position include the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Analytics, Data Science, Math, Statistics, Physics or related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, R, SQL
- Knowledge of platforms such as MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, MySQL, etc
- Proven ability to connect the dots from the data to the business solution.
- Proficient technical writing and public speaking skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with machine learning techniques.

- Knowledge of industry best practices for data science and data governance.
In addition to the above, the Energy Supply Data Scientist II requirements include the following:
- A minimum of 3 years of related professional experience.
- Understanding of generation dispatch, transmission, and organized wholesale markets.
- Experience with business intelligence and data analytics tools such as Power BI and Tableau.
- Hands-on experience with MLOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, model deployment, monitoring, and versioning.
Experience with cloud services and platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure for deploying and managing ML models, specifically using Azure Databricks, Azure Machine Learning Studio, Azure Data Factory
Experience using Azure DevOps and Git for version control
Experience in story-telling through the use of data
Preferences
- Master’s in data science or related technical field.
- Understanding of generation dispatch, transmission, and organized wholesale markets
- Understanding of business intelligence and data analytics tools such as Power BI and Tableau
