General Purpose

Develops advanced engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the company’s generation, transmission, distribution, telecommunication, or other utility facilities/systems.

 

This position will support company initiatives related to development and implementation of innovative technology projects in the Transmission and Distribution business areas. Key focus areas include wildfire mitigation, cybersecurity, automation and system reliability.

 

 

This position is available at multiple levels.  Applicants will be considered for the level that best matches their education and experience. 

Responsibilities

  • Develop Protection system schematic designs
  • Conduct Short circuit and symmetrical component analysis
  • Perform protection system coordination studies localized and wide area
  • Develop Relay settings and protection system automation logic
  • Maintain departmental databases and system models
  • Conduct arc flash analysis
  • Manage Integration with SCADA systems
  • Develop complex electrical engineering studies, plans, detailed scopes of work and protection system criteria.
  • Provide peer review as part of the defined QA/QC process for internal and external engineering design, settings and studies.
  • Guide and direct level I, II and III engineers, technicians and drafters.
  • Act as a lead/expert within the company and provide guidance to management and other engineering groups on complex engineering problems.
  • Deliver on commitments to accomplish assigned work.
  • Analyze and design engineering methods.
  • Comply with NERC, FERC and WECC regulations
  • Recommend alternative engineering solutions to management to meet business needs. 
  • Supervise focused engineering teams to deliver special projects, internal initiatives and run departmental processes. 
  • Occasional travel for project work and training

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an ABET-accredited university.
  • A minimum of five or more years’ experience in industrial power systems or electric utility power systems, or related professional experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of principles in area of engineering specialty.
  • Project management and leadership skills including the ability to work as a team member, to maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.
  • Understanding of company’s business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Working knowledge of applicable FERC, NERC and WECC standards and the National Electric Codes.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers including automated tools.

Additional Requirements for the SR II position include the following:

  • A minimum of six years’ experience in industrial power systems or electric utility power systems.
  • Advanced technical degree or professional engineer (PE) license strongly desired or 7 years of directly applicable engineering experience required.
  • Knowledge and application of engineering principles in the area of substations design, power system protection and/or power system analysis

 

Preferences

  • Professional Engineering License (PE)
  • Power systems focused Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) or Masters of Engineering in Electrical Engineering (MEngEE)
  • Proficiency in substation design
  • Proficiency in power system protection design and settings

This position is eligible for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 15.00% of salary.
