General Purpose

The finance and accounting specialist prepares financial and business-related analyses and other work product supporting the following areas of focus: Capital expense, business planning, regulatory filings and discovery, general accounting and month-end close activities, and general finance and business support to internal client organizations. Provides advice and counsel to management and client organizations. Conducts special studies and analyses, develops alternatives, presents recommendations to management and influences management decisions. Researches, analyzes, develops and implements new strategies, programs, and/or processes in response to changing internal and external conditions

Responsibilities of this position include the following:

  • Analyze and interpret actual capital project expense and plant in service results against plan and report to management.
  • Provide financial, analytical and general business support to internal client organizations.
  • Assist in the development of the 10-year transmission capital including the uploading of data into the UI corporate model.
  • Support general accounting and month-end close activities through the preparation and processing of journal entries and accruals, preparation of interdepartmental cost allocations, reconciliation of general ledger accounts, and support of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance efforts.
  • Provide information to support the development of regulatory filings submitted to state and federal regulatory oversight agencies.
  • Work independently with department managers to develop financial targets and assist client organizations in delivering against established targets.
  • Develop and maintain efficient, reliable and accurate business reporting tools.
  • Implement and manage internal controls to maintain Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
  • Analyze and reconcile general ledger data including preparing journal entries.
  • Direct special projects and studies as assigned.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

Requirements for this position include the following:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of five years experience in accounting or a related field.
  • A strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience in financial statement preparation and analysis.
  • Program design skills including development of interventions, processes, or new or modified programs to meet customer needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to establish trust, maintain confidence, and understand social behavior and interactions.
  • Ability to work with all organizational levels, and to influence actions and negotiate outcomes.
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively through oral and written means.
  • Project management and leadership skills, including the ability to work as a team member, to maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers to gather, analyze, and summarize data.
  • Knowledge of research, analysis, and consulting techniques, procedures, practices, and applicable federal, state, and local governmental laws and regulations. 

Preferences

  • Advanced degree and/or CPA designation.
  • Advanced skills in Excel
  • General understanding of FERC Code of Regulations.  
  • Experience in fixed asset accounting and depreciation theory and practices.
  • Experience in SAP Financial Systems modules.  
  • General understanding of utility economics and accounting, as well as utility commission rules and regulations.
