General Purpose

This position is responsible for management of the hourly trading and optimization function and personnel, for the purpose of reducing net power costs.  The areas of responsibility include short-term sales and purchases of wholesale power, optimizing system resources, hourly scheduling of interchange transactions, EIM market bidding and transfers, merchant transmission portfolio and financial instruments consistent with the strategic direction of the Company. This position will coordinate daily activity around real-time market operations including coordination with ESM Generation Dispatch. Responsible for implementing and supporting company programs and policies.  

Responsibilities

  • Manage and execute an hourly resource strategy to optimally balance Company’s load and resource position within all NERC, FERC, WECC and other regulatory compliance obligations.
  • Manage the team and direct day-to-day activities and provide guidance and recommendations. Ensure appropriate shift coverage.
  • Select, coach and manage development and performance evaluation of department staff.
  • Monitor and optimize merchant transmission rights and usage, ensuring compliance with internal and external policies
  • Negotiate trades, communicate requirements, and establish effective working relationships with traders, schedulers, and transmission providers.
  • Develop short term trading strategies to increase corporate margin through optimization of the Company's portfolio of generating assets within bilateral and ISO markets.
  • Adhere to all national and regional reliability standards.
  • Sell or purchase energy, to balance and optimize current system load and resource requirements.
  • Collaborate with other real-time traders to optimize available generation assets such as thermal, hydro and wind.
  • Develop and maintain resource bidding strategies that optimize system resources and hourly financial position.
  • Collaborate with resource management staff, forward and gas trading to develop the most efficient operating strategy.
  • Analyze and evaluate complex energy transactions to ensure that all relevant aspects including energy price, greenhouse gas charges, congestion revenues, transmission utilization, counter party and contractual terms are favorable to and consistent with company guidelines for risk management.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with wholesale power marketers, traders, brokers, and the financial community.
  • Provide post-operational analysis to improve performance.
  • Interpret and validate complex model outputs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Marketing or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • A minimum of seven years’ experience in Energy trading.
  • A minimum of three years’ in people management.
  • Knowledge of California ISO procedures and practices. 
  • Experience in organized ISO/RTO/EIM markets.
  • Proven skills for all facets of energy market operations; energy sales and purchases; bidding; transmission purchases; and electronic tagging.
  • Understanding of all pertinent NERC, FERC and WECC reliability standards.
  •  Ability to establish objectives, execute policy, monitor resources, and lead the development or implementation of a system, program or process.
  • Leadership and teamwork skills to provide input into policy decisions and to mobilize resources to produce desired business results.
  • Knowledge of Company’s strategic plan, objectives for specific area, as well as Company policies, procedures, and practices and federal, state, and local governmental laws and regulations.
  • May be required to work non-standard hours including nights, weekends and holidays to support 24-hour real-time staff.
     

Preferences

  • Advanced degree or certification.
  • Experience transacting at electric power and natural gas trading hubs. 
  • Experience with PCI, Pi, BSAP, CAISO OASIS, OATI
  • Knowledge of power plants, market hubs, and interchange points between companies. 
  • Database proficiency.
  • Visual Basic Proficiency.
  • Advanced knowledge of non-standard over-the-counter options/financial products.

This position is eligible for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 40% of salary.
