General Purpose

Develop engineering standards, documents, plans, and specifications associated with the design, operation, and maintenance of company SCADA systems used for the monitoring and control of the company’s expansive electric grid.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a lead engineer in the SCADA engineering work group.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for SCADA engineering in design principles, architecture planning, communication protocols, EMS integration, design documentation, equipment configuration, status/analog/control point parameters, etc.
  • Develop engineering standards based on sound engineering principles and methods to support evolving company needs and objectives.
  • Develop complex engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, and design documents to support standards documentation and efforts.
  • Analyze, test, and evaluate new SCADA solutions or improvements to existing SCADA solutions.
  • Lead in the integration of new technologies or methods with existing technologies and methods, ensuring compatibility and adherence to existing standards and dependencies.
  • Lead in the SCADA design of numerous RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) architectures to support various ongoing projects, including creation or modifications to RTU designs, configurations, and points list implementations, as needed.
  • Design, develop, and evaluate systems, processes, or facilities to support company objectives utilizing standard engineering methods.
  • Develop alternative engineering solutions (with management direction) to meet business needs.
  • Develop complete SCADA designs utilizing standardized engineering methods.
  • Deliver on commitments, performing site visits and coordinating with field personnel when necessary to accomplish assigned work.
  • Effectively track identified standard needs and work with management and others for solutions.
  • Maintain project timeliness and budgets.
  • Manage outside engineering services to accomplish assigned work, as necessary.
  • Utilize industry standard and innovative methods and techniques for obtaining optimal results.
  • Train and mentor junior SCADA engineers, as needed.
  • Act as a resource for management on complex engineering questions or issues by providing proposed solutions and addressing standards needs in a timely manner as they arise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree. A minimum of two years additional directly related technical experience is required.)
  • A minimum of ten years of directly related experience in engineering related field.
  • Expert level knowledge of electric grid energy management systems or similar for the purpose of configuring and engineering SCADA systems used for electric grid monitoring, protection and control.
  • Expert knowledge and application of principles in area of SCADA engineering.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
  • Ability to provide timely assessments with limited information and/or assumptions.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools. 
  • An on-site presence is required to perform collaborative functions of the position.

Preferences

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license or successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Engineering experience specifically related to industrial power systems or electric utility power systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of SCADA terminology and systems, including RTU (Remote Terminal Unit), IED (Intelligent Electronic Device), EMS (Energy Management System), HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and annunciator technologies.  
  • In-depth knowledge of serial communication standards, including TIA-232-F (RS-232) and TIA-485(-A) (RS-485).
  • Intermediate experience with IP networking and Ethernet technologies, including the development of IP-based networks.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices, including NERC CIP standards.
  • Advanced experience with DNP3, Modbus, and working knowledge of legacy communication protocols, such as SC1801, PERT 26/31, and TG6500 and TELEGYR protocols.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSI Monarch or other energy management systems.
  • Familiarity with company SCADA systems (NovaTech Orion, GE D20, Landis & Gyr, BASIC, etc.)
  • Familiarity with other SCADA system architectures, including advantages and disadvantages.Understanding of fiber transport and microwave/wireless system technologies, including TDM-based communications systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations, and the National Electric Codes.

This position is eligible for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 20.00% of salary.
