General Purpose


Working with significant independence and under general direction, the senior software engineer participates in the design, programming, testing, documentation and implementation of complex computer applications and systems. Evaluates software packages, provides recommendations to management and business clients, and identifies best technology solutions. Identifies future needs for key technologies and techniques and develops plans for adoption.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Software Eng 1, 2 position include:

  • Work with senior specialists to design, code, test, and implement complex programs; develop appropriate programs and system documentation according to established IT standards.
  • Assist others to enhance existing systems; participate in client walkthroughs and technical design reviews.
  • Aid in system development planning and monitoring.
  • Participate in design reviews and peer code walkthroughs. Provide client and application support.
  • Participate in development and ensure conformance to performance optimization and interoperability standards and requirements. 
  • Develop subject matter expertise through participation in consultation with clients and IT in support of the company’s IT strategy, overarching business requirements.  
  • Participate with IT teams to identify technical deficits and improvement opportunities in current practices and procedures.
  • Apply industry standard techniques as appropriate such as automated unit testing, test-driven development, continuous integration and iterative development for example.

In addition to above, the responsibilities of the Software Eng 3 position include:

  • May act as senior contributor or technical lead on small to mid-sized projects.
  • Design, code, test, and implement complex programs; 
  • May act as senior contributor or technical lead on small to mid-sized projects.
  • Enhance existing systems; participate in client walkthroughs and technical design reviews.
  • Act as a subject matter resource and consult with clients and IT in support of the company’s IT strategy and overarching business requirements.  
  • Collaborate with IT teams to identify technical deficits and improvement opportunities in current practices and procedures.

In addition to above, the responsibilities of the Sr Software Eng position include:

  • Architects, designs, codes, tests, documents, implements and maintains more complex application programs and interfaces. 
  • Provides technical support; problem determination and investigation; implementation of upgrades for developed applications. 
  • Perform software development and ensure conformance to performance optimization and interoperability standards and requirements. Work in adherence to secure development lifecycle practices and policies. 
  • Performs or assists in the research and fact-finding to develop or modify application programs. Includes working with vendors to review quality, adaptability and compatibility of their products. 
  • Stay current with industry standards techniques for software development, and apply them to development, testing, integration and reporting processes where appropriate. 
  • Consults with application users in developing functional/technical specifications.
  • Consults with application users, evaluates user requests for new or modified computer applications and associated interfaces to determine feasibility, cost and time required, compatibility with current systems and computer capabilities.
  • Performs any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Requirements

Requirements of the Software Eng 1` position include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems or a related field; or the equivalent combination education and experience.
  • Experience in business software application design, development, and implementation.  Knowledge of Object-Oriented Design (OOD) methodologies and Object-Oriented languages.
  • Consultative aptitude including communication and interpersonal skills that enables understanding of client needs, define requirements, and assist with providing effective solutions.
  • Familiarity with current and emerging technologies, tools, and applications.  An understanding of structured analysis and technical design concepts.
  • Familiarity with common industry architectural patterns and software design patterns.
  • Ability to work in a zero-code-ownership environment where the team members can modify any source file at any time.

Requirements of the Software Eng 2 position include:
A minimum of three years of experience in business software application design, development, and implementation.
Experience in the industry or in an environment whose scope, size, and complexity are comparable.
Project management skills and the ability to develop and monitor work agreements and budgets, as well as the ability to determine specifications, schedules, and deliverables. 
Knowledge of current and emerging technologies, tools, applications, and vendors.  Knowledge of deployment topologies (ie. ensuring secure, highly available systems).
In addition to above, the requirements for the Software Eng 3 include: 

  • A minimum of four years of experience in business application design, development, and implementation.
  • Advanced Knowledge of Object Oriented Design and methodologies. Advanced knowledge of common industry architectural and software design patterns.
  • Advanced knowledge of deployment topologies (ie. ensuring secure, highly available systems).

In addition, the requirements for the Sr Software Eng include all of the above: 

  • (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.) 
  • A minimum of six years of experience in business software application design, development, integration and/or installation. 
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of programming in client/server or web development environment. Experience in the industry, or in an environment whose scope, size and complexity are comparable.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of relational database technology.  Demonstrated project management skills and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently. 
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of information technology terms, equipment, systems, functions and major vendors. Experience integrating large disconnected enterprise-class systems in a robust, fault-tolerant manner consistent with industry standards. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.  Effective analytical and problem-solving skills. Availability for periodic on-call responsibilities. 
  • Experience integrating Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) solutions within an environment with strong change and release management processes and procedures. 
  • Technical knowledge with hands-on experience in Oracle and Microsoft SQL database development. Technical knowledge with hands-on experience in current computing programming languages.

Preferences

  • An understanding of change and release management processes and procedures.
  • Technical knowledge with hands-on experience in Java, Python, C# .NET, PL/SQL and other common enterprise computing programming languages.
  • Experience with other development process methodologies such as Agile, Lean, Scrum or others.
  • Experience integrating large disconnected enterprise-class systems in a robust, fault-tolerant manner consistent with industry standards.
  • Provides technical support; problem determination and investigation; implementation of software patches and upgrades for commercial (vendor) applications. 
  • Support client-server packages both thick and thin clients, and web applications.
  • Conduct research and fact-finding to develop or modify application programs; work with vendors to review quality, adaptability and compatibility of their products.
  • Provides some technical responsibility for an application involving multiple support personnel that is critical to the operation of the business; or serves as a technical leader, or provides extensive knowledge and skill in a unique technical area.
  • Designs, codes, tests, documents, implements and maintains moderately complex application programs and interfaces.
  • Experience with development, maintenance and monitoring of PERL and Bash shell scripts in a Linux environment. Experience with Linux Redhat V5+ OS tools and monitoring, JAVA runtime environment and libraries integrated into the Linux OS. 
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating with OS administrators and product operation staff in identifying and resolving issues related to highly visible 24x7 enterprise applications. Intermediate skill set relative to Oracle and SQL Server database using SQL required. 
  • Willingness to take ownership of the health and reliability of two 24/7 Tier 1 Enterprise Applications required. 
  • Lead upgrades and patches on two 24/7 Tier 1 Enterprise Applications as required.

This position is on the Berkshire Hathaway Energy Transmission and Distribution (T&D) IT application team. The team comprises software engineers, systems analysts, and quality assurance professionals providing development, system integration, and support for critical utility industry enterprise applications. The team supports several business units, which include electrical grid operations, grid technology, grid reliability, distribution operations, and system control. Technologies and systems include OMS, DMS, ADMS, FLISR, and DERMS, supporting the electrical distribution system, fault circuit indicators, and field distributed energy resources (rooftop solar, batteries, EV). The goal is to provide our nearly 5M customers with reliable, resilient, efficient energy safely and securely.
