General Purpose
Create, revise, and update engineering standard that affect all levels of distribution & transmission systems design for the company. Work with other internal groups to technically evaluate external suppliers and manufacturers, and their material to ensure material integrity and reliability. Offer specialized expertise in interpreting relevant federal, state and governing body (e.g. NESC) regulations, as well as expertise in material failure modes and the inspection and troubleshooting techniques used to detect them.
*This role may involve up to 10% travel.
Responsibilities
• Support procurement in efforts to increase material redundancy and resolve material shortages.
• Collaborate directly with suppliers to foster strong business relationships.
• Evaluate suppliers’ ability to manufacture material effectively and reliably.
• Review manufacturer drawings to ensure that they conform to internal specifications and standards.
• Develop and maintain publications describing material, material specifications and installation of material.
• Ensure that all publications and materials comply with all applicable federal, state, and governing body (e.g. NESC) regulations and requirements.
• Lead or assist in investigations into equipment failures, ensuring root causes are identified and necessary corrective actions are implemented to prevent future failures.
• Pursue, analyze, pilot, and review new technologies for the purpose of cost reduction, reliability improvement and wildfire mitigation.
• Provide field support to address issues related to equipment, standards, and compliance. Collaborate with field teams to resolve technical challenges and ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Review joint use applications, pole sizing requests.
• Provide recommendations for the use of material based on specific applications.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college/university.
• Understanding of the role of governing body rules, regulations, and requirements in engineering standards.
• Understanding of the benefit of recognizing material failure modes and their detection.
• A fundamental understanding of transmission, and distribution system layouts, including their key constituent components.
• Understanding the role of troubleshooting distribution and transmission outages, with respect to material failures.
• Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information effectively to a group of peers.
• Demonstrated ability to remain calm in potentially charged conversations.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully research information not currently existing in organization.
• Fundamental understanding of wildfire mitigation technologies, strategies, and solutions.
Additional Requirements for the position, at Engineer II level, include the following:
• Demonstrated ability to find effective solutions to problems.
• Fundamental understanding of pertinent governing body rules, regulations, and requirements like NESC, GO 95, IEEE, ASTM, ASCE, as they relate to material, material installation, and procedures.
• Ability to identify material failure modes in 25% of the material in area of responsibility and how to detect them, both before and after failure.
• A minimum of two years of experience in designing distribution or transmission systems, or related professional experience.
• A minimum of two years of experience applying troubleshooting techniques to address material-related distribution or transmission outages.
• Ability to communicate technical information effectively and persuasively to larger internal groups.
• A minimum of two years of experience in designing with, or the use of, wildfire mitigation technologies, strategies, and solutions.
Additional Requirements for Senior Engineer level, include the following::
• Ability to research and efficiently identify applicable governing body rules, regulations, and requirements such as NESC, GO 95, IEEE, ASTM, ASCE, as they relate to material, material installation, and procedures.
• Ability to identify material failure modes in 50% of the material in area of responsibility and how to detect them, both before and after failure.
• A minimum of five years of experience in designing distribution or transmission systems, or related professional experience.
• A minimum of five years of experience applying troubleshooting techniques to address material-related distribution or transmission outages.
• Ability to communicate technical information effectively and persuasively in presentation format to larger external groups, including people with a less technical background.
• A minimum of five years of experience in designing with, or the use of, wildfire mitigation technologies, strategies, and solutions.
Additional Requirements for Senior Engineer II level, include the following:
• Ability to competently identify and interpret applicable governing body rules, regulations, and requirements such as NESC, GO 95, IEEE, ASTM, ASCE, as they relate to material, material installation, and procedures.
• Ability to identify material failure modes in 75% of the material in area of responsibility and how to detect them, both before and after failure.
• A minimum of six years of experience in designing distribution or transmission systems, or related professional experience.
• A minimum of six years of experience applying troubleshooting techniques to address material-related distribution or transmission outages.
• Ability to communicate technical information effectively and persuasively to company executives.
• A minimum of six years of experience in designing with, or the use of wildfire mitigation technologies, strategies, and solutions.
Additional Requirements for Principal level, include the following:
• Expert ability to identify and interpret applicable governing body rules, regulations, and requirements such as NESC, GO 95, IEEE, ASTM, ASCE, as they relate to material, material installation, and procedures.
• Ability to identify material failure modes in all the material in area of responsibility and how to detect them, both before and after failure.
• A minimum of ten years of experience in designing distribution or transmission systems, or related professional experience.
• A minimum of ten years of experience troubleshooting distribution or transmission outages, with respect to material failures.
• A minimum of ten years of experience in the use of wildfire mitigation technologies, strategies, and solutions.
Preferences
• Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
• Advanced degree in EE or ME with emphasis on power.
• Professional Engineering License
