General Purpose

Supervises a location or segment of a larger department. Implements business objectives, strategies, and plans and manages daily work functions. Responsible for selecting, coaching, and developing employees. Implements and supports company programs and policies. Specifically, this position supervises and directs the safe production of coal or an associated function in the operation of an underground mine.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate and direct underground maintenance activities including equipment preventive maintenance, rebuild and repair; and equipment and manpower utilization to ensure a safe, productive, high quality, low cost and efficient operation. Lead by example and promote safety as a value and ensure compliance with mine plans, ventilation plans, roof control plans, company safety rules and state and federal regulations. Supervises and or performs Mine Health and Safety Administration mandated testing, inspections and recordkeeping. Coordinate maintenance activities and cooperates with production, safety and engineering departments to ensure workable and cost effective plans are developed and followed, and that maintenance and safety goals are achieved. Establish employee accountability through a combination of expectations, planning, monitoring and follow-up. Treat employees fairly and communicates honestly and directly. Develop the skills of maintenance employees through a combination of goal setting, delegation, training, counseling, and performance reviews. Responsible for training both supervisory and hourly employees to meet operations, maintenance and regulatory standards and methods. Ensure both company and employees comply with the collective bargaining agreement, process grievances and work to resolve labor related issues without conflict as much as possible at the front line level. Coordinate with mine manager to develop mine/department operation and capital budgets. Develop justifications, specifications and bid evaluations for capital purchases and monitors and approves contractor work or manufacturing. Monitor department budget to ensure budgets are delivered. Drive continuous improvement in all maintenance processes. Evaluate department performance on a continual basis and makes adjustments to meet goals. Evaluate/promote new maintenance methods, processes and technology and benchmarks against industry.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent. • A minimum of seven years of progressive maintenance experience and training expertise in mine operations and/or engineering or the equivalent combination of education and experience. • A minimum of three years of people management experience • Experience and working knowledge with underground electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and diesel equipment and maintenance processes and procedures associated with this equipment. • Fire Boss certification • Mine Safety and Health Administration electrical certification. • Management skills including the ability to establish objectives, execute policy, monitor resources and manage department operations. • Leadership and teamwork skills to provide input into policy decisions, and to mobilize resources to produce desired business needs within and among departments and with all shifts. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to manage and motivate employees and work collaboratively with other departments. Ability to confront and communicate expectations and monitor results. • Great sense of accountability and an ability to teach and hold others to that standard. • Knowledge of company’s strategic plan, objectives for maintenance department (underground), as well as company policies, procedures, and practices and applicable federal, state and local government laws and regulations. • Ability to assemble task lists, prioritize and utilize management skills to effectively oversee maintenance resources and implement action plans for achieving objectives. • Basic computer skills including email and word processing. Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills.

 

 

Preferences

• Experience with bargaining unit requirements and collective bargaining agreements.
