General Purpose

The Assistant Meter and Relay Technician is in training for the position of Journeyman Station Meter and Relay Technician.  

Responsibilities

The Assistant Meter and Relay Technician shall work with and under direction of a Journeyman Station Meter and Relay Technician and shall be allowed a maximum period of two (2) years to complete study materials, examinations, and on-the-job training to qualify as a Journeyman Technician.  

  • A Journeyman Technician has a working knowledge of company substation protection and control schemes.
  • A Journeyman's duties are to:
    • Install, maintain, test, adjust, troubleshoot and repair substation equipment which includes, but is not limited to electromechanical, solid state and microprocessor protective relays, indicating and KWH/KW meters, recording instruments including sequential event recorders and digital fault recorders, controls to all substation apparatus including breakers, transformers, regulators, capacitors, reactors and all associated equipment, and remote control equipment including various forms of System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
    • Perform testing on substation apparatus such as power factor testing, transformer turns ratio testing, megger testing and other analytical tests as assigned.
    • Operate substation equipment, including switching and grounding.
    • Follow safety rules and company standards.
    • Work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions, and be responsible for tools, test equipment, and vehicles.

TYPICAL DUTIES 

1.         Attend technician training schools to learn relay standards and theory and complete electronic courses as specified for the Relay Technician Trainee program.  

2.         Keep and assist relay technicians in keeping records and files of work performed, reports on outages and trouble, and equipment records.  

3.         The typical duties described herein represent a major portion of the job.  Other similar duties may be assigned.  When management deter­mines that it is efficient to do so, employees in this classifica­tion may be assigned duties of less complexity. 

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, or proof of equivalent.
  • Certification in an electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent program
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workload and use computerized test program
  • Basic computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Internet)
  • Candidate must have good driving record
  • Strong ability to follow safety policies and procedures
  • Must pass the relay seminar exam with an 80% or better (Given by RMP upon selection)

Physical requirements may include working in confined spaces and in elevated work areas such as heights from ladders, towers, structures, roofs, scaffolds, buckets etc, on construction sites, near moving mechanical parts, in the proximity of fumes, dust, noise, water, working in close proximity to cables and conductors energized at 600 volts or higher. May work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions, and be responsible for tools, test equipment, and vehicles.
