Responsibilities

•    Inspect at regular intervals, distribution, and transmission substation apparatus, buss work and all related automatic equipment and controls such as electronic switches and relays, circuit breakers, regulators and transformers to ensure proper operation.
•    Report or correct problems of malfunctioning equipment.
•    Install and remove portable recording instruments and clamp-on type amp meters for regular and special load checks on overhead and underground facilities.
•    Take regular readings of substation amps, demand, and kilowatt load as required.
•    Perform routine and emergency switching including fuse replacements on transmission overhead and underground distribution systems as directed by power dispatchers. 
•    Check overhead and underground capacitor bank installations and make adjustments, set controls or make minor repairs when necessary. 
•    Perform periodic tests using special test equipment on apparatus such as switches, controls, circuit breakers, regulators, transfer switches, capacitor banks, etc. and make necessary adjustments or minor repairs to maintain reliable electric service.
•    Troubleshoot substation electrical faults and take appropriate action to restore electric service in an efficient and reliable manner. 
•    May install conduit, pull in conductor and make connections on new or existing facilities and equipment.  May install and/or replace wiring on control and switchboard panels. 
•    Work from blueprints, diagrams, schematics and manufacturers bulletins in constructing, operating or maintaining substation equipment and facilities. 
•    May perform various construction work such as building forms, pour and finish concrete projects, erect control buildings, substation steel and other apparatus as required. 
•    Direct the work of apprentices and helpers as assigned by supervision.
•    Prepare reports on all switching orders and times of trouble.  Keep logbook of station equipment and operations and record meter readings.
•    The typical duties described herein represent a major portion of the job.  Other similar duties may be assigned.  When management determines that it is efficient to do so, employees in this classification may be assigned duties of less complexity.

Requirements

  •   Candidates must be a Journeyman Lineman or Substation Journeyman.
  •  All Substation Journeyman / Troubleshooter candidates shall have three years substation switching experience which consisted of switching in and out circuit breakers, transformers, regulators, and other major substation electrical equipment. The candidate must have switched a minimum of 10 procedures in each of the three years.
  • All Substation Journeyman / Troubleshooter candidates, which are not a substation journeyman shall complete the entire Substation Apprenticeship Program as outlined by the Substation Apprentice Training Sub-Committee. A Journeyman who does not complete all planned training as scheduled will be removed from their position as outlined in section 2 of this document.
