General Purpose

Provides technical leadership on the most complex and business critical engineering projects. Facilitates internal training for engineers and technicians. Develops presentations for senior management and recommends and implements changes to benefit the company.  Develops engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the Company’s generation, transmission, distribution, telecommunication, or other utility facilities/systems.


  • Independently conduct highly complex engineering research studies and technical analyses in areas of specialized expertise not commonly available or obtainable in the competitive engineering market. 
  • Develops strategies and pilot project plans for presentation to senior management on emerging grid technology.
  • Develops and builds interdepartmental consensus on analytical approaches and related critical input assumptions that will shape the Company’s grid modernization strategy and/or its implementation.
  • Evaluates new emerging technologies to ensure all issues are addressed holistically and that solutions are tailored to PacifiCorp’s engineering and operational needs.
  • Lead root cause analysis activities and provide technical expertise to vendors on material design, manufacturing and testing requirements.
  • Provide expertise in the area of data analysis, outage management, distribution automation (DA),  circuit coordination, post disturbance analysis, etc
  • Develop, implement and maintain distribution automation systems that increases system value and enhance distribution system reliability. 
  • Manage software and programming requirements for a variety of protective equipment and automation systems.
  • Perform communication integration on distribution controls which includes setup and testing.
  • Lead project teams in the development of critical engineering solutions.    
  • Serve as the Company expert in the discipline and provide authoritative consultation and recommendations to senior management. 
  • Develop detailed design specifications and prepare bid packages for external engineering services and similar contracts to support the needs of the business. 
  • Review, investigate and evaluate system and equipment performance, tests and analyses performed by senior Engineering staff. 
  • Participate in government, industry, collegiate and other applicable associations or work groups which have the ability to influence or set policy impacting the future of our utility.


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college/university.
  • A minimum of 15 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, including experience performing highly technical work of a specialized nature. 
  • A PE license is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of distribution system design, commissioning, operations, asset management, and capital planning in the electric utility sector
  • Advanced understanding or ability to learn various computer application skills including fault analysis software, relay test set software, communication protocol testing software, AutoCAD, and a variety of distribution control programming software packages.
  • Advanced understanding of AC fundamentals and three-phase power systems. 
  • Ability to develop engineering specifications, processes and procedures.  This should be accomplished while using basic engineering judgment, evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve objectives.
  • Experience with interpreting technical drawings (i.e., wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, outline drawings, oneline diagrams) is a plus.
  • Project management and leadership skills including the ability to work as a team member, maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments. 
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness. 
  • Highest level of communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools.
  • Advanced understanding of applicable federal, state, and local laws regulations and electrical codes.


  • Experience in grid innovation / modernization technology deployment roles
  • Experience with the design, installation, and/or commissioning of grid innovation projects
  • Development and/or implementation of grid modernization roadmaps / programs that could include increased system automation, AMI implementation, advanced P&C systems, (A)DMS deployment, FLISR systems, microgrid planning, and grid edge field devices

Hiring Range: $110,300 - $129,800 

This position is eligible for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 15.00% of salary.
