General Purpose

Manages the day-to-day substation technical operations for Pacific Power and Rocky Mountain Power that have significant impact on corporate, business unit, or organizational objectives. Establishes and implements business objectives, strategies, and plans.  Manages and allocates financial and employee resources. Responsible for selecting, coaching, and developing technical employees and responsible for management of employee salaries. Implements and supports Company programs and policies.  Responsible for adherence to department budget.  Responsible for 24/7 technical support for substation apparatus, protective relays and communication equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and modify policies and practices to improve the overall operational effectiveness of PacifiCorp's transmission and distribution system.
  • Provide technical support to critical and highly complex operation and control functions within the business. 
  • Lead development and implementation processes and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness. 
  • Evaluate policies, procedures and other documentation and ensure all aspects of electrical operations are in accordance with Company safety procedures and legislative requirements. 
  • Analyze schemes and prints and prepare field notebooks and outlines for installation of relays for technicians.
  • Provide substation training as needed for various departments including dispatch, substation operations, and T&D operations.
  • Provide 24/7 technical support for normal operation and outage restoration of substation relays, substation equipment and communications equipment.
  • Develop maintenance procedures and schedules for substation circuit breakers, transformers, load-tap changers, battery banks, capacitors, reactors and regulators.
  • Manage multiple groups including apparatus support, communications support and materials support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of seven years’ experience in distribution operations, substation operations, dispatch operations or substation engineering.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in a functional or direct supervisory role.
  • Knowledge of the power system.
  • Assessment skills including problem diagnosis and identification of proper methods and techniques to resolve and prevent future problems.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult and resolve internal and external customer issues which maybe critical, sensitive, or urgent in nature.
  • Ability to work with all levels of an organization including people with different styles and backgrounds; ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Expert knowledge of current technologies, tools, systems, and vendors.
  • Understanding of applicable Company policies, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively translate technical jargon into layman’s terms.
