General Purpose
A Relay Technician Trainee is a formalized multi-year training program, which if successfully completed, will result in the candidate attaining Relay Technician status. A Relay Technician is a journeyman with a working knowledge of substation protection, control, and metering equipment.
We will have various locations that the Trainees will be located during training. Upon successful completion of the training program a final position within the Rocky Mountain Power service territory, which includes Utah, Southeast Idaho, and Southwest Wyoming, will be determined.
Responsibilities
• Attend technician training schools to learn relay standards and theory and complete electronic courses as specified for the Relay Technician Trainee program.
• Assist and complete work under the direction of Relay Technicians and Area Relay Technician as outlined on the Relay Technicians' job description.
• Keep and assist relay technicians in keeping records and files of work performed, reports on outages and trouble, and equipment records.
• The typical duties described herein represent a major portion of the job. Other similar duties may be assigned. When management deter¬mines that it is efficient to do so, employees in this classifica¬tion may be assigned duties of less complexity.
• Install, maintain, test, adjust, troubleshoot and repair substation equipment. This includes, but is not limited to electro-mechanical, solid state and microprocessor protective relays, indicating and KWH/KW meters, recording instruments including sequential event recorders and digital fault recorders, controls to all substation apparatus including breakers, transformers, regulators, capacitors, reactors, and all associated equipment, and remote control equipment including various forms of SCADA.
• Perform testing on substation apparatus such as power factor testing, transformer turns ratio testing, megger testing and other analytical tests as assigned.
• Operate substation equipment, including switching and grounding.
• Must follow safety rules and company standards.
• May work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, may work with bucket and boom trucks. They may work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions, and be responsible for tools, test equipment, and vehicles.
• Be able to read and understand electrical prints, and be knowledgeable in the testing and check out of new capital projects.
• Operate substation equipment, including substation switching.
• Follow safety rules and company standards.
• May work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, may work with bucket and boom trucks.
• May work independently or with others, occasionally work long hours during emergency conditions, or be required to work out of town.
• Training curriculum will include classroom work, on-the-job training and completion of a skills check-off list to be jointly completed by the Area Relay Technician and Relay Technician Trainee
Requirements
- A high school diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be a certified Journeyman Lineman, Journeyman Electrician, Journeyman Meterman, I & C Technician, or Substation Journeyman.
- Has successfully completed an electrical apprenticeship or equivalent program.
- Must attend an orientation seminar and pass a pre-qualifying test (selected candidates will be contacted)
- Must have a good driving record.
- Must have a current CDL or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
Preferences

Prior experience with electric utility substations.
- Prior experience with protection and control equipment.
